Club Championship Update

Last week we shared the outcome of the Ladies Club Championship and this week it’s the turn of the Gents. A good turn out of spectators on what was a beautiful evening to watch the leaders come home saw a new Champion this year in Ferghus Milne.

Ferghus returned a closing 69 to take his 4 round 72 hole total to +1 and take the top spot followed closely by 9 time Champion Adam Lindsay. Ferghus can be seen pictured here making his winner’s speech. Congratulations!

Junior news

Junior 5 hole fun golf

Last Sunday saw some of our younger junior members take part in ‘5 hole fun golf’ played from the blue tees that you may have noticed from 150 yards or less on holes 1 to 5. Aimed primarily at junior members aged 12 and under, the focus of these weekly events is about having fun, learning about the game, and simply playing golf. The next ‘5 hole fun golf’ will be this Sunday 7th July and we would encourage any of the younger junior members to come along, ready to tee off at 4pm.

Hopefully we can see this running on a weekly basis throughout the rest of the season with the continued support of parents. If there are any questions, please contact the Pro Shop.

Well done to Ben Read who not only won the Junior Club Championship this year but also finished 4th in the Gents Championship which included a terrific 66 in the 3rd round.

Megan wins again!

Ladies Scottish Amateur 2019 (Barrassie GC)

Congratulations to Kim Beveridge (Aboyne GC) who is the new Ladies Scottish Amateur Champion and to our own ladies Club Champion Megan Robb who won the Clark Rosebowl consolation trophy. Well played ladies and a great result for Aboyne & Banchory Clubs.

Callaway Fitting Day

Reading between the lines

One of the hardest things in golf is green reading; it is also something that the majority of golfers never learn how to do properly. So, without giving away all the secrets, here are some handy tips to help keep you on track and hole more putts.

High and low

Prior to reaching the green, take note of the high and low points of the surface and where your ball lies in respect to these. This will help you to build a general picture before reaching your ball.

360 picture

If you’re struggling to read which way your putt breaks from behind the ball, try walking around to the other side of the hole as this can often highlight any breaks you may have missed or reaffirm your original read.

Are you focusing on the wrong thing?

As soon as the ball has left the putter face, we know whether it’s going to be good or not. It’s like a sixth sense, right? But what constitutes a good putt? Many golfers let the final outcome decide this – i.e. whether the ball ends up in the hole or not – but that is arguably well out of our control. So, perhaps it's time to refocus on what we can control?

There are only two things we can really control when it comes to putting. The first is starting the ball on the correct line. Take Tiger Woods for example; the 15-time major winner focuses on a blade of grass he wants the ball to roll over immediately in front of him, which brings the intended target much closer to impact.

The second is getting the ball rolling correctly, which means imparting top spin as quickly as possible after impact rather than having it jumping and skidding in the air.

One way to control our putting is by utilising the technology in PING’s stunning Vault 2.0 putters.
