Welcome to the hole in one club!

Joseph Thain checked one off the golfing bucket list by making a hole in one on the 3rd last week. Twelve year old Joseph had contemplated using his driver but decided his 7 iron as the right club, and he was correct! He was playing with his dad Walter, and hails from a good golfing pedigree. His Grandad Joe was a scratch golfer and quite a famous amateur in the North East of Scotland. He was also a well known member at Banchory and Royal Aberdeen Golf Club but sadly died on the golf course after a birdie at the 16th on his way to the 17th tee, and a wee brass plaque can be found on the first fence post in remembrance.

Congratulations once again young Joe!

Pro’s Day – Saturday 15th September

SPACES REMAINING!!!!

This will be a Texas Scramble 4 player format where teams of any combination can enter with the only caveat being no more than two juniors per team. Example: 4 Ladies, 4 Gents, 3 Gents plus 1 junior, 2 Gents plus 2 juniors. Teams of 4 ladies will receive an extra 2 strokes onto their club handicap for this fun event.

Entry fee will be the same as last year at £10 per adult with juniors free. We will have team prizes, plus the usual on course challenges including ladies, gents & juniors nearest pin, longest drive plus a new one for this year, a straightest drive challenge! There will also be Deano’s Bar at the 12th where we will be offering a selection of complimentary refreshments for all players.

We will also be running the ever popular “Double your Dough” challenge where you can lay down a bet on your tee shot staying on the green – tee shots that stay on the green will have the stake value “doubled” with all bets taken on the day will be rewarded as shop account credit – even if you do not stay on the green your bet still gets credited – You Simply Cannot lose!

Texas Scramble Open

Our single remaining Open will be played on Sunday 23rd September and is the popular Texas Scramble format. Teams of ANY 4 players can enter, for example 4 ladies, 4 gents or mixed teams.

Gents member/guest Day - Saturday 29th September

With this event being played on the 2nd day of this year’s Ryder Cup, we are working with Chef Ramsay in compiling a USA/European theme dining options to combine with this event - more information to follow next week. Will keep you posted.

All roads lead to Paris…

The finale of the Made in Denmark tournament was an all-English affair, with a four-way play-off between Lee Westwood, Jonathan ‘Jigger’ Thomson, Steven Brown and eventual winner Matt Wallace. The tournament was played at the home course of Ryder Cup Captain, Thomas Bjorn, and the event has become a firm favourite with both players and fans alike. Due to the European Tour tournament rescheduling that will take place next year, the Made in Denmark will move to the week of BMW PGA at Wentworth and hopes to attract even more big names.

The automatic picks for Europe’s Ryder Cup team were also decided in Denmark, but I’m sure you are all now talking about the Captain’s wildcard picks that took place on Wednesday. The American team still have one pick remaining with the finale of the FedExCup unfolding over the next few weeks and all eyes on East Lake for the next 10-million-dollar man!

Mind the gap

Gapping is vitally important to any golfer. Being able to pick a club out of the bag and knowing exactly how far you can strike the ball will make for more confident shots, as you won’t be constantly wondering if you should club up or club down.

Not just for wedges
Gapping is often associated with the shorter clubs in your bag, but it's just as important to make sure you pay attention to the gaps between your longer clubs, too.

Good gapping would see you have equal gaps between clubs that are no bigger than 15 yards, as displayed in the green illustration below. In contrast, bad gapping would leave you with uneven or large distances between clubs, often over 20 yards or under 10. Having equal gaps throughout your bag will mean you are much closer with your next club, so you won’t have to manufacture shorter/longer swings or hit soft/hard shots, which is where a lot of problems begin.

Being able to know exactly how far each club goes can be even more helpful if you have a GPS device telling you the exact distance between your ball and the pin. So if you're still guessing how far you hit each club, come and speak to a member of the team. We can guarantee it's costing you shots.
