Last Saturday I tuned in to the World Golf event that was played in Mexico and watched in amazement when DJ (Dustin Johnston) pegged up his driving iron on the opening hole which is 322yards in length (similar to the 1st at Banchory) and proceeded to rip his tee shot which carried all the way onto the green finishing approx 20 feet from the hole then holed out for eagle.
He is the current world No 1 for a reason and with length like that who can say he won't be sitting high for some time. I have attached a link of his tee shot so you can all marvel at his prodigious power.
Back in the Day
Who remembers wooden woods? Club member EricPattillo popped into the shop last week with a wooden persimmon Dunlop Peter Thomson Driver. God it brought back memories straight away of how we used to play the game. How did we manage to handle off centre strikes with such a micro sweet spot!!
Of course the centre face of the head was plastic (ivorine material) as shown here and compared with the modern driver was less than half the overall size - the scratch golfer & professional who played the game back then surely had more skill in both striking such a small face as well as shaping the ball in challenging conditions - this really shows us how modern technology has advanced the game on so many levels. To add to the driver image Eric also had an immaculate conditioned leather head cover which was a must have in the bag back then - nothing like a bit of nostalgia!

Modernising Golf's Rules
Last week the R&A proposed some key changes to the Rules of Golf from 2019. Their Rules Modernisation initiative has been underway for a few years now and this is the next stage in that process. The aim is to not only make the Rules easier to understand, but also to address some of the game's current problems, such as speed of play, and ensure they fit the needs of today's game.
Please spare a couple of minutes to complete our survey, which gives you the chance to have your say on the proposed changes.
We've picked out some of the most significant Rules changes for you to digest in this survey, before giving you the chance to say whether you agree or disagree with each of them. It'll be great to know your thoughts.
